Boy Scouts complete work at McGulpin Point

Posted on April 24th, 2013

More than a dozen Boy Scouts from Troop 4 in Ann Arbor, under the leadership of Eagle Scout Michael Saunders, worked over the weekend of April 27-29 to complete several restoration and construction projects they began last summer at McGulpin Point Lighthouse.

Saunders is working to achieve the prestigious Hornaday Silver Award. About 17 scouts, parents and advisors worked to complete the roof and benches in a hand-made cedar gazebo at the Straits of Mackinac shoreline. Saunders and his crew constructed the framework of the gazebo in summer 2011. The scouts also installed informational signage at the historic site.

In addition, Boy Scout Tommy Oldani began efforts to replicate the well-head structure of an historic well on the property, as part of an Eagle Scout project. His team put in four stakes to begin preparing the well site for restoration.

Emmet County wishes to express its appreciation for the efforts of the Scouts, whose efforts were coordinated by Dick Moehl, president of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers’ Association. McGulpin Point Lighthouse and Historic Site is an important piece of Emmet County history.
